The Veterinary and Food Safety Directorate of Olt reported on Monday, April 29, 2024, that an outbreak of African swine fever was confirmed in pigs from a commercial holding in the village of Negreni in the city of Scornicesti. The result comes on the basis of the analysis report issued on Thursday, April 25, by the Bucharest Animal Health and Diagnostic Institute, and no less than 11,400 pigs would be killed at the pig farm in the town of Olte.

“On April 25, 2024, the Olt Local Disease Control Center met at the Prefecture and approved the Plan of measures to combat African swine fever in the commercial pig farm in Negreni, Scornicești city, Olt county, where the elimination measure is applied to all pigs, respectively a herd of 11,425 pigs, in accordance with the provisions of the veterinary sanitary legislation in force. The carcasses of the dead or killed pigs and all the materials in the premises of the holding will be destroyed under official supervision, in accordance with the legal provisions”, said Venera Popa, spokesperson of DSVSA Olt.

Following the confirmation of the outbreak of swine fever at the commercial farm in Negreni, there are some protection zones, but a surveillance zone has also been demarcated.

“The protection zone includes the following localities: Scornicești – Negreni, Chițesca, Piscani, Mărgineni – Slobozia. Also includes Hunting Fund 11 Horseshoe and Hunting Fund 8 Scornicesti. According to the same source, DSVSA Olt requests the support and understanding of territorial administrative units, citizens and economic operators for compliance with these measures, considering the seriousness of the disease and the serious economic consequences generated by its occurrence.

“To prevent the spread of the disease, all suspect animals must be slaughtered and neutered, and the owners will be compensated by the state, under the conditions provided by law. We make it clear that African swine fever does not affect humans, there is not even the slightest risk of illness for humans, but this virus has an impact on a social level from an economic point of view. DSVSA Olt will periodically inform the public in the county, regarding the evolution of the disease, respectively the measures required to combat it”, Venera Popa also specified.

The quoted source also says that it is prohibited to sell, sell or move in any form live pigs, meat and pork products from the restricted areas, as a result of the evolution of the African swine fever virus. Restrictions regarding the organization of agglomerations of live animals for the purpose of their commercialization are maintained – ban on the operation of live animal fairs.
