The rower Gianina van Groningen declared, on Monday, at the Official Hall of the “Henri Coandă” Airport, that she owed the European title in Szeged because together with Ionela Cozmiuc she had been trying to get it for many years.

“We never lost, I knew this boat was a very strong one before I came back to rowing. I am very happy for this result. We owed ourselves this European title because we tried so many years to get it and finally we won it. We still have two months of work in which we can become even faster. We will do everything in our power to do some extraordinary races at the Paris Olympics.” she specified.

Gianina van Groningen (former Beleaga), returned to performance sports after a break of about a year and a half, mentioned that the break helped her. “I took the break well, I think I came back more determined. Besides, the break helped me physically and mentally. It’s clearly an improvement, and this was seen at the European Championships,” explained the rower.

Her colleague in the double rowing boat, light category, Ionela Cozmiuc, declared for her part that she really wants the Olympic gold.

“Of course we can also get the Olympic title, the only thing we are missing. We want this and we will do everything to get the Olympic gold. We have always said that we cannot promise medals, but we promise to give everything to win”. stated Ionela Cozmiuc.

Romania finished second in the final standings, with eight medals, four gold, two silver and two bronze, ahead of Great Britain (8-1-1), but finishing ahead of Italy (2-3-3) , of Norway (2-0-1), of Germany (2-5-1), etc.

On Saturday, Romania won three medals, one gold, one silver and one bronze. The gold of the tricolors was won in the double rowing, light category (Gianina van Groningen and Ionela Cozmiuc), the silver was won in the women’s four row (Mădălina Bereş, Maria Lehaci, Magdalena Rusu and Amalia Bereş), and the bronze in the men’s 8+1 ( Mihăiță Șigănescu, Ciprian Tudosă, Constantin Adam, Mugurel Vasile Semciuc, Florin Arteni, Sergiu Bejan, Ştefan Berariu, Florin Lehaci, Adrian Munteanu).

On Sunday, Ioana Vrînceanu and Roxana Anghel won gold in the women’s double sculls, Andrei-Sebastian Cornea and Marian Enache prevailed in the men’s double sculls, the third gold medal being obtained in the women’s 8+1 (Magdalena Rusu, Roxana Anghel, Adriana Adam, Maria Lehaci, Mădălina Bereş, Amalia Bereş, Ioana Vrînceanu, Simona Radiş, Victoria-Ştefania Petreanu), Florin Arteni and Florin Lehaci won silver in the men’s double sculls, and Ancuța Bodnar and Simona Radiş won the bronze in the women’s double sculls .

Romania qualified 12 crews in the medal finals out of the 13 they sent to Szeged.

At the 2023 edition of the European Championships, held in Bled (Slovenia), Romania won six medals, including five gold and one silver.
