How much will the Easter meal cost you this year, if you prepare it at home or if you order the goodies online

Of course, it matters whether you prepare the Easter meal at home or order your goodies online. It matters what you put on the table. HotNews did the math on a basic Easter menu with appetizer, first course, second course and a dessert, all prepared in house.

We assumed that the Easter meal includes:

APPETIZERS

We have taken into account the following appetizers: roe salad, eggplant salad, boeuf salad, traditional sausage, sheep’s curd, radishes, green onions, lamb shank and red eggs.

For each one I calculated the ingredients, taking into account the weight per liter or per kg used (in the case of oil, sugar or butter as appropriate.

I also assumed portions for 4 people.

Appetizers cost you about 250 lei, without taking into account the cost of utilities (gas or electricity used) nor the cost of the physical labor of the one who prepares them. Compared to last year’s costs, the price of ingredients is on average 15% higher.

If you order these appetizers, their cost exceeds 360 lei plus shipping fees, which can sometimes be substantial.

MAIN DISH

I took into account the preparation of a lamb borscht (3L), a roast lamb in the oven (1kg), a tray of potatoes in the oven with rosemary (1.2kg), along with a green salad.

The cost of these dishes does not exceed 160 lei, if we prepare them at home. Compared to 2022, we are paying 25% more this year. But if we think about ordering them online (saving the physical effort and the cost of utilities) we will take out of our pocket more than 500 lei. For example, a lamb shank is about 150 lei, a lamb soup is 100 lei, a lamb steak is about 200 lei.

DESERT

I put something minimalist: a walnut scone, a pastry and a wine. Prepared at home, you save 150 lei (+28% compared to 2022). If you order them with home delivery, you pay between 100-150 lei just for the cake (depending on the weight, if it is with sugar or sweeteners). I put a wine at an average price – 70 lei a bottle. In short, ordered online, from 150 lei to 350 lei.

ConCluSIonS

Prepared at home, you can ensure a decent Easter meal for about 560 lei. Much more than you gave last year (with all the salary increases). That’s right, if you want to save physical effort, you can order home delivery. Except that this will double your costs and you will spend about 1200 lei. In the end, it depends on what budget you have prepared.

But beyond money, the Easter meal is more about being together with family. The rest of the issues (including those related to money) should fall into the background.
