The project to obtain the Construction Authorization for section 3 Cornetu – Tigveni of the A1 Sibiu – Pitesti Highway is close to completion and is to be completed during this month, according to the statements of the Secretary of State for Transport, Irinel Ionel Scrioșteanu. He was confident that the Italian company WeBuild will be able to repeat the success of the mobilization it had on section 5, where it managed to exceed the schedule of works. This mountain section of the A1 highway represents the largest ongoing highway contract in Romania.

In a post on his Facebook page, the Transport official provided information on the progress of work on this section won by WeBuild:

  • Drilling of test piles, necessary for testing the specific terrain in the area, has been started. In total, 21 test piles will be drilled, 3 in each of the 7 different areas of the site. So far, the piles have been drilled in 4 zones, and in the next period they will start testing them by compression and pullout, at depths between 25 and 40 meters.
  • The research activity of the archaeological sites is carried out.
  • Deforestation outside the Forestry Fund has been completed, and deforestation within the Forestry Fund is nearing completion.
  • The Building Permit Project is nearing completion, due to be handed over later this month.
  • Construction work continues on the construction site in the Cepari commune, on a 7-hectare plot of land, where the administrative offices will be located, as well as the asphalt and concrete stations.
  • Work is underway to set up the Racovița workplace, on a 4-hectare plot of land, which will include administrative offices, a laboratory, 2 concrete stations and a precast range.

“The beginning of the organization of the construction site is promising and we are confident that the contractor will be able to achieve the same good results as on Section 5, where the works are ahead of schedule,” Scrioșteanu emphasized.

According to the constructor WeBuild, approximately 3,000 workers, both from Romania and from other countries, will participate in this work, for the largest highway work in the country: a section of 37 kilometers and an investment of 1.2 billion euros . Also, as part of this contract, the longest highway tunnel in Romania will be built, with a length of 1.7 kilometers.

The works to be performed include:

  • Over 12 km of bridges, passages and viaducts;
  • Over 25 km of consolidation works;
  • Construction of 2 road junctions;
  • Construction of an ecoduct.

Section 3 of the Sibiu – Pitesti, Cornetu – Tigveni Motorway:

  • Contractor: Webuild SPA Association – Tancrad SRL;
  • Length: 37.40 km;
  • Contract duration: 57 months (12 months design, 45 months execution);
  • Value of the contract: 5.323 billion lei, without VAT;
  • Funding source: Transport Program (PT);
  • Current stage: Design;
  • Completion date: 2028.
