Klaus Iohannis says that Romania had economic growth and that “it will perform well economically”, he thus answered when asked about the fact that our country had the highest inflation in the EU, for the third consecutive month. “It is clear that certain measures would be very good, but they are difficult to take in an election year”, the head of state also claimed.

In the press conference held on Wednesday evening with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, Klaus Iohannis was asked what trajectory he sees for the economy and whether the Government could have taken other fiscal measures last year, in the context in which, for the third consecutive month, Romania has the highest inflation in the European Union, and the European Commission believes that the budget deficit could reach 7% of GDP at the end of this year.

“Now I wouldn’t want to enter the Government area, but even in the conditions of quite high inflation, you are right. And he’d better get off as soon as possible. We had economic growth and, in perspective, I believe that Romania will perform well economically. And I am convinced that after all the elections we have this year we will have a government that will know how to quickly recover both the growth area and the inflation area. It is clear that certain measures would be very good, but they are difficult to take in an election year, but these issues are also aware at the Government and Coalition level, and I am convinced that the recovery will be quite fast, perhaps surprisingly fast “, declared Iohannis.

In February, Romania recorded the highest level of the harmonized index of consumer prices (an inflation indicator that allows comparisons of inflation at the European level) in the EU, at 7.1%, followed by Iceland (5.3%) .

Latvia, Denmark and Italy had the lowest inflation rates (below 1% each), according to Eurostat.
