President Klaus Iohannis declared, on Wednesday, that Romania is deeply engaged in advancing all the priorities of the European Union for the period 2024-2029 and showed that our country can contribute significantly to this process.

The President Klaus Iohannis and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, will host, on Wednesday, at the Cotroceni Palace, a working meeting dedicated to the preparation of the future Strategic Agenda of the European Union, in which the Prime Ministers of Belgium, Hungary and Croatia will also participate.

“We will start the discussion along the lines drawn together by the Granada Declaration, from October 2023, which marked the beginning of the process of defining our strategic orientations and priorities for 2024-2029 and identified among the priority themes: security and defense, expansion, involvement of the European Union at the global level, resilience and competitiveness, energy and migration. Romania is deeply engaged, every day, in the advancement of all these Union priorities and we can contribute significantly to this process, including on the basis of our experience as a state that joined more recently and which is in the immediate vicinity of the war in Ukraine”, said the head of state, after the meeting with the president of the European Council, Charles Michel.

He emphasized that, from Romania’s perspective, in the coming years, at the level of the European Union, it is necessary to focus on “consolidating the European construction”, referring in particular to security and defense.

“It is our main priority and the perspective from which we look at Bucharest and the European Union expansion process: as a long-term strategic investment in our common security”, said the head of state.

President Iohannis stated that, in terms of connectivity, Romania wants a Europe well anchored in supply chains at the global level, and the Black Sea has a strategic role in this regard.

“At the same time, it is important to see connectivity as a vector for deepening integration within the Union,” added the head of state.

Regarding the Single Market, he pointed out that it remains a fundamental pillar of the European project and the best tool to strengthen growth and resilience, including to face external shocks.

“I will advocate for the stimulation of competitiveness, the maintenance of cohesion within the Internal Market and fair conditions of competition in the Union and in relation to external partners,” Iohannis said.

The President of Romania showed that the discussions on the EU Strategic Agenda will highlight the unity and common commitment of the member states to find solutions to the priority problems for the citizens and to strengthen the Union in a key moment of its existence.

“Major challenges await us, but we also have the lessons learned from the last five extremely difficult years, in which the Union proved that it is resilient, adaptable and capable of protecting its citizens”, added the head of state.
