In the first part of the 20th century, the square was called Piața Regele Matia, and in 1918, after the Great Union took place, it became Piața Unirii.

However, its name was changed to Freedom Square, and after the fall of communism it returned to its old name: Union Square.

The market is the largest in size (approx. 220m by 160m) of the old markets located in central and south-eastern Europe. The square is also called Piața Mare or Centru.
