In the electoral battle for the mayoral seat of District 1 of the Capital, the main duels confirmed will take place between the current mayor, Radu Mihaiu (USR, supported by Forța Dreptei), Rareș Hopincă (PSD-PNL) and Andrei Tinu (AUR) – the son of the former journalist and director of the daily Adevărul Dumitru Tinu who died in an accident in 2003.

Radu Mihaiu

Radu Mihaiu, the current mayor of Sector 2, is running for a second term. Aged 46, he was born in Râmnicu Vâlcea and is a computer science teacher by profession.

He was an adviser at the Ministry of European Funds in the Cioloș Government, where he dealt with the evaluation of IT projects and procedures, then became secretary of state in the same ministry. Before entering politics, he worked in the private sector, in the IT field.

According to the wealth declaration of June 2023, Radu Mihaiu owns a plot of land of 256 square meters in Bucharest, and two apartments, also in the capital, one of 75 square meters and one of 120 square meters. He has no personal car.

Rares Hopincă

Pesedist Rareș Hopincă, prefect of Bucharest until recently, is the candidate of the PSD-PNL alliance for the Sector 2 City Hall.

Aged 39, he has a degree in philosophy and was also general councilor of the Bucharest Municipality, and city manager of Sector 5, until Piedone’s return to the position of mayor of S5. In the 2017-2018 period, Hopincă was general director at the Sector 5 City Hall. And before that he worked privately, in PR and communication.

According to the latest declaration of wealth, Rareș Hopincă has two apartments in Bucharest, one of 66 square meters and another of 41 square meters. He has no personal car, but says he owns art and jewelry worth 30,000 lei.

Andrei Tinu

Andrei Tinu, the son of the former journalist and director of the daily Adevărul Dumitru Tinu who died in an accident in 2003, is the AUR candidate for the Sector 2 City Hall.

Aged 38, he holds a doctorate in History from the University of Bucharest and began his political activity in 2006, when he was elected the national leader of the Greater Romania Student Movement, a subordinate structure of the Greater Romania Party. Then, he was in the PSD and in September 2023 he was elected the new president of the Bucharest branch of the Republican Party of Romania.

According to a declaration of wealth from November 2022, Andrei Tinu owns 5 plots of land, in Bucharest, Breaza and Coteana (Olt), a villa of 175 square meters in Bucharest, a holiday house of 95 square meters in Breaza and an apartment of 90 meters square in Bucharest.
