Taiwanese firefighters suspect that one person was crushed to death by falling rocks in Hualien, in the east of the country, where the epicenter was, and that more than 50 people were injured.
At least 26 buildings collapsed, more than half in Hualien, with about 20 people trapped and rescue operations underway, authorities said.
Japan’s weather agency said several small tsunami waves touched parts of southern Okinawa Prefecture, and later downgraded the previous tsunami warning to a warning. It estimated the magnitude of the earthquake at 7.7.
The Philippine Seismological Agency also issued a warning to residents of coastal areas in several provinces, urging them to evacuate to higher ground. Taiwan also issued a tsunami warning, but no damage was reported and the warning was lifted.
Chinese state media said the quake was felt in China’s Fujian province, while a Reuters witness said it was also felt in Shanghai.
The two nuclear power plants in Taiwan were not affected by the earthquake, Taipower announced.
Taiwan’s official Central News Agency said the quake was the biggest to hit the island since 1999, when a magnitude 7.6 earthquake killed about 2,400 people and destroyed or damaged 50,000 buildings.
