Save the Children representative: 53 percent of the localities in Romania do not have a family doctor or have insufficient family doctors / In rural areas, one family doctor serves 10,000 people

The coordinator of the Mother and Child Health program within Salvaţi Copiii, Silvia Burcea, has sounded the alarm regarding family doctors in rural areas. According to her, 53 percent of rural localities do not have a family doctor or have insufficient doctors. Also in the rural area there are family doctors who serve 10,000 patients.

“As the reality on the ground shows, but as the reality exemplified by the statistics at the national level, presented by the INS, 53 percent of the localities in Romania do not have a family doctor or have insufficient family doctors. Most family medicine practices are located in rural areas. It is an interesting statistic from the INS that shows us that a family doctor’s office in the rural environment serves more than 10,000 people, while in the urban environment, 13 offices serve 10,000 people”, said Silvia Burcea, on Monday, at Medika TV.

The representative of Salvaţi Copiii believes that the Romanian state should get involved in attracting family doctors to the rural environment.

“The state should get more involved in the rural environment, attract family doctors, keep them there, do prevention campaigns and work with us, the NGOs that have experience in the field,” Silvia Burcea said.
