Gelu footbridge, close to completion | TIMPOLIS

The reconstruction of the Gelu footbridge, which connects the Dâmbovița and Iosefin neighborhoods, is close to completion, Timișoara City Hall announces.

The investment fully supported from the local budget by Timișoara City Hall is in the stage of installing the waterproofing and reinforcing the last piece of retaining wall on the right bank of the Bega. In the immediate period, the pavement support layer will be poured and the green spaces, pedestrian areas, cycle paths and architectural lighting will be laid out.

“It is one of the strategic projects for better bicycle and pedestrian connections in Timișoara. I am glad that in a few weeks both cyclists and pedestrians will be able to use the new bridge, which will be accessible to everyone. We have also worked on new velo corridors that reach the footbridge and connect with existing routes. Alternative transport is important for decongesting road traffic and reducing pollution. Timișoara is today on the road to the better“, declares the mayor Dominic Fritz.

The new bridge will be ready by April 27 and will have access ramps instead of the steep stairs designed in 1949. The width will vary between 5.40m and 8m, thus providing space for pedestrian paths, bicycles, squares in the central part and green spaces. 14 dwarf trees in their own pots and 40 ash trees will be planted.

The investment of more than 12 million lei (VAT included) of the Timișoara City Hall will allow the crossing of Begă in safe conditions both for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as for people with disabilities.
