On Sunday, Romania officially enters Air Schengen! Information and documents required for airport checks. The explanations of the authorities.

According to Antena 3 CNN, there are only a few days left until Romania will enter the Schengen Area, at least by air and sea. Although it is good news for Romanians who want to travel faster to EU countries, this accession raised several problems for the authorities.

We will avoid the queues at passport control, but we are still required to carry the documents for the trip. Furthermore, the police can do random checks whenever they see a person who looks suspicious.

“Persons entering the terminal after going through the security screening procedure will not be subject to border control as it was today or as it is today at the drums that we all know. Passengers will go directly to the boarding gates and throughout this along the way they will be able to be checked by the Border Police”, says Bogdan Despescu, Secretary of State.

Romanian airports have been reconfigured for Air Schengen

Romanian airports have been reconfigured and, starting from Sunday, there will be two areas: one dedicated to travel within the Schengen area and one for flights outside the area.

We will get rid of the queues at passport control, but we are still obliged to have the documents with us: a valid identity document, but also the written consent of the parents if we are traveling with a child.

Those who will travel to the Schengen area accompanied by minors will still have to have with them all the documents they needed until now. The only difference is that those checks will no longer be mandatory. Instead, more border policemen will be at the airport and will do random checks.

How the checks will be done for Air Schengen

The checks will be done with the help of an application installed on the phones and tablets of the border guards. In order to avoid that people who do not have the right to leave Romania take advantage of the accession to the Schengen area and leave the country, random checks will be made every time the police sense something suspicious.

“If problems are identified, the persons involved will be taken to the second line of verification”, said Bogdan Despescu, secretary of state.

At this second check, the border police will clarify the passenger’s situation and, if necessary, take measures. Last year alone, more than 110,000 air flights to or from the Schengen area were registered in Romania.
