Romanians are on the last hundred meters with their Easter shopping, which is expected to be somewhat poorer than other years. Of course, compared to Easter 2023, prices have increased by almost 30%.

In general, Romanians will allocate roughly the same budget as last year, only they will be able to buy less now. A study carried out by a major retailer shows that 40% of those surveyed stated that they have a budget similar to last year for the Easter holiday. The table will be poorer, however, due to the increase in food prices.

Three out of ten Romanians want to spend more money, precisely to cope with price increases, while 27% are thinking of reducing them. On average, most Romanians estimate that they will allocate around 600 lei for the Easter meal. Those with a helping hand, i.e. one Romanian out of ten is willing to spend up to 1,000 lei.

Food and beverages top the shopping intent with nearly 64%, followed by gifts – nearly 21% of funds, while 6% is clothing.

Easter will generally be celebrated with the family, but there are exceptions: only 5% of Romanians have vacation plans.

Easter is coming, prices are going up

Many Romanians rushed to do their shopping earlier, in order to catch better prices, knowing that in our country prices rise before Easter. Almost all Easter-specific products appeared on store shelves three weeks ago. Here are some prices: 10 pieces of dyed eggs cost between 26 lei and 28 lei. A carton of normal eggs, size L, costs 12.5 lei/10 pieces. At the weekend, in the capital’s Moghioroș market, the egg had a price of 0.9-1 lei/piece, while at local producers it varied between 1.2-1.5 lei/piece.

At the same time, lamb meat had a price of 49-50 lei/kg, and the flesh was sold for 65 lei/kg, the cutlet for 70 lei/kg, and the organs for 29 lei/kg. However, premium offers also appeared on the market, i.e. leg of lamb from New Zealand, for example, at a price of 140 lei/kg.

As for the cake, the offer is between 15 lei – 35 lei in supermarkets, while in patisseries it starts from 70 lei and even reaches 150 lei for syrup cakes, fashionable for some time.
