A 2016 dispute regarding the inheritance of the building on Gheorghe Magheru in Sibiu, which belonged to the wife of President Iohannis, did not even receive a deadline at the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ÎCCJ), although the appeal was registered last September, according to the portal the supreme court.

“The case is in the filter procedure. The first court term is to be allocated later”, it is stated on the ÎCCJ website.

The litigation was opened by Rodica Bastea, a friend from Miami, Florida, of the Iohannis family. She requests the annulment of a certificate from 2008 by which the Romanian state was declared the legal heir of the building at Gheorghe Magheru 35. Between 1999 and 2008, the house belonged to Ioan Baștea, the woman’s husband, deceased in the meantime, Georgeta Lăzurcă, the president’s mother-in-law, and Carmen Iohannis, his wife.

According to ANAF, this inheritance dispute blocks the recovery by the state of another building lost in court by the Iohannis family in November 2015. It is about the commercial space in Sibiu, Nicolae Bălcescu street 29 (the pedestrian thoroughfare with terraces leading to Piața Mare). Due to litigation, the succession was suspended by the public notary in Avrig.

In November 2015, the Brașov Court of Appeal decided that the building was illegally owned by the Iohannis, and in April 2016, the family’s title was removed from the land register.

From then until now, the Romanian state has not been able to register its ownership of the building due to disputes regarding the inheritance, which are not ending. The state, through ANAF, cannot obtain the certificate of the heir of the building in Bălcescu 29, as it has already obtained for the building in Magheru 35, a document contested in court by the friend of the Iohannis family. Meanwhile, the commercial space sits unused.
