The police officers of the Economic Crime Investigation Service within the Călărași County Police Inspectorate, under the supervision of the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Călărași District Court, executed 49 home search warrants, in Călărași County, at the homes of persons suspected of collecting, possessing, transporting , taking over, storing, handing over and selling smuggled cigarettes.

Thus, in the period July 2023 – February 2024, several people would have purchased cigarettes from Suceava county and the municipality of Bucharest, transported and stored them in Călărași county, later sold them to street vendors from different areas of Călărași .

Also, during the above-mentioned period, 6 arrests were organized in flagrante delicto, with 107,800 smuggled cigarettes detected, as follows:

1. On November 1, 2023, at around 10:00 a.m., police officers from the Călărași Municipality Police stopped a vehicle driven by a 36-year-old man for control, and following the specific control of the vehicle, 220 packages of cigarettes, which did not have a tax stamp applied.
2. On November 22, 2023, policemen from the Lehliu Gară City Police detected a man while he was transporting 110 packs of cigarettes in his car.
3. On February 1, 2024, at around 3:00 p.m., a crew from the Călărași Municipality Police stopped a car in traffic, driven by a 56-year-old man, and following the check, 110 packs of cigarettes were found for which he did not have documents of provenance.
4. On February 15, 2024, with the support of the gendarmes from the Călărași County Gendarmerie Inspectorate, an action was taken to catch a red-handed offense in the Călărași municipality, a 39-year-old man was found while unloading 750 packs of cigarettes.

5. On February 16, 2024, at 8:40 a.m., the Road Service police detected an 83-year-old man while driving a car outside the town of Ștefan-Vodă, Călărași county, and after checking the car, 8,000 were found of cigarettes (400 packs), without provenance documents and without fiscal marking, the entire quantity being confiscated.

6. On the morning of April 26, 2024, the police officers from the Economic Crime Investigation Service carried out an arrest action in flagrante delicto in the municipality of Călăraşi, in cooperation with the policemen from the Călăraşi Municipality Police – Road Bureau, the Public Order Bureau and gendarmes from to the Călărași County Gendarmerie Inspectorate, a 34-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman were found to be carrying 60,000 contraband cigarettes. Also, in the town of Dragalina, a 54-year-old man from Suceava county was identified, who allegedly transported to Călăraşi municipality approximately 200,000 smuggled cigarettes, 150,000 lei being found in the vehicle, representing the value of the cigarettes brought.

At the same time, during the day of April 26, 49 home search warrants were executed in Călărași County, and 28 arrest warrants were also executed.

Following the searches, 1,752,142 contraband cigarettes, 20,370 lei, 28,160 euros and 1,935 pounds were discovered and seized for further investigation.

The total value of the assets raised in order to continue the research is 1,494,997 lei.

In the case, a criminal file was drawn up in terms of committing the crimes of collecting, possessing, producing, transporting, taking over, storing, handing over, selling and selling goods or goods that must be placed under a customs regime, knowing that they come from smuggling or are intended to be carried out, if the quantitative or value limits are exceeded and the collection, possession, production, transport, takeover, storage, delivery, distribution and sale of goods or goods that must be placed under a customs regime, knowing that they come from smuggling or are intended for its execution, if the quantitative or value limits are exceeded.

At the same time, 18 people were detained for 24 hours, and they were deposited in the Călăraşi Detention and Preventive Arrest Center.

Also, against 8 people, the prosecutor from the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Călărași Court ordered on April 27 this year, the measure of judicial control, for 60 days.

At the same time, 10 people were proposed for preventive arrest.

The action benefited from the support of the Special Operations Directorate of the Romanian Police, the Bucharest Special Operations Bureau, the Călărași Special Operations Service, the Constanta Coast Guard, the Călărași County Gendarmerie Inspectorate, as well as that of the policemen of the Criminalistics Service, the Criminal Investigation Service, the Weapons Service, Explosives and Dangerous Substances, the Public Order Service, the Internal Control Office, the Judicial Records Service, Statistics and Operative Records, the Călăraşi Municipality Police, the Oltenița Municipality Police, the Lehliu-Gără City Police, the Fundulea City Police, the Budeşti City Police and fighters from the Service for Special Actions within the Călărași County Police Inspectorate.
