The representatives of the Constanța Environmental Protection Agency remind that, annually, on March 30, the International Day of Zero Waste is celebrated. The day was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations, following the adoption of a Resolution on 14 December 2022, during its 77th session.

Promoting “zero waste” initiatives can contribute to the advancement of all the goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. These targets cover all forms of waste, including food waste and waste, natural resource extraction and e-waste. According to the data, humanity generates between 2.1 and 2.3 billion tons of municipal solid waste per year, of which only 61-62% is managed in controlled facilities. About 2.7 billion people do not have access to solid waste collection. Municipal solid waste production is expected to increase from 2.3 billion tons in 2023 to 3.8 billion tons by 2050.

“Dear fellow citizens, to ensure a livable future, the current model of exploiting the Earth’s limited resources must be urgently stopped and waste reduction and circular economy strategies put in place to protect the well-being of future generations. It is time to give back as much as possible of the resources consumed. Behave as a conscious consumer, buying only what is necessary and avoiding goods that are over-packaged, disposable or have a short shelf life, use product return and warranty systems where they exist. Reuse and recycle at home to reduce waste and the burden it represents for municipalities and the environment, sort the inevitable waste for an economic and sustainable management of it”, said the Minister of Environment, Water and Forests, Mircea Fechet, on the occasion of this celebrated day nationally.
