For over 30 years, on April 1, the Romanian Ornithological Society has been celebrating Bird Day. This year, because April 1st falls on a Monday, SOR partners, members and volunteers across the country are offering biology enthusiasts two days early to participate in exciting interactive activities in nature.

On Saturday, March 30, starting at 1 p.m., SOR invites you to the 2nd edition of the Bird Day, organized at the “Ioan Borcea” Agigea Marine Biological Resort. There will be activities for participants of all ages, dedicated not only to birds, as the Director of the Resort told us, Dr. Emanuel Baltag:

Bird Day, which is actually on April 1st, we’re doing it a little earlier so we can catch the weekend and have more participants. Because we cannot talk about birds only, as a separate entity, but we have to talk about them as part of the ecosystem, we will address several topics, that is, we will talk about birds, we will talk about insects, we will talk about amphibians, about reptiles. We’re basically trying to address this whole part of nature, because they’re all interconnected and they’re all dependent on each other. So we invite you to come and see the birds up close, because at our ringing station you will be able to see birds that are ringed, that are then released, so you can see some birds up close. It depends a lot on what will happen during that period, what will pass in the migration, but the little ones will be able to participate in the workshops, they will be able to paint various silhouettes of birds on clay molds. Then, for those who want, we have a themed trail on which there are various environmentally friendly structures – artificial nests for insects, feeders, hedgehog houses, insect hotels – all kinds of such things that everyone can make in yard or maybe put them in the park or school garden. And we’ll explain what these structures are for, how you can use them, and how you can increase your biodiversity near you, near your home.

What other surprises have you prepared for those who will visit you on Saturday at this event dedicated to biology enthusiasts?

You will have the opportunity to see insects up close. We will have two binocular magnifiers that you can use to see very small insects, to see them up close, that is, to see them magnified, so that you can get to know them better. You will have the opportunity to see other, larger insect species with a normal magnifying glass. You will have the opportunity to see species of herpetofauna. We hope to have the Dobrogean turtles then, which have not yet come out of hibernation, but until then, if good weather is announced, they will come out and then you will be able to see them up close. Also, the frogs here from us, from the resort, which are certainly active now and which you will be able to meet, and you will be able to find out more information about them. And, as I said, we hope to have more species of birds in the bird nets, so that you can see them up close. During this period, the pupuses pass by, there are species of plovers, plovers, plovers, so we hope you will be able to see them up close and see what such a bird actually looks like.

According to the announcement on the Facebook page of the event organized in partnership with the Romanian Ornithological Society, on Saturday, March 30, in the generous space of the Biological Station, we are invited to an afternoon of non-formal education, in which to return to nature and to be part of it.
