Earthquake on Palm Sunday. The Gorj seismic zone has been reactivated

The seismic zone in Gorj was reactivated even on Floriior Sunday. A weak earthquake with a magnitude of 2.5 on the Richter scale occurred in Oltenia, at a depth of 15 kilometers, according to the National Research and Development Institute for Earth Physics (INCDFP).

It is the second earthquake announced by INCDFP on Palm Sunday. In the early hours of the morning, an earthquake of 3.3 on the Richter scale occurred in the Vrancea seismic zone. The epicenter was located at a depth of 86.2 kilometers and was felt in the following localities.

41 km west of Focșani, 67 km north of Buzău, 69 km east of Sfântu-Gheorghe, 82 km east of Brașov, 93 km south of Bacău and 95 km southwest of Bârlad, the quoted source also stated. 29 earthquakes occurred in April. The magnitude of the seismic movements varied between 2 and 3.9 on the Richter scale.

Heavy seismic activity this weekend

This weekend seismographs recorded three earthquakes. The first, of 3.5 degrees on the Richter scale, occurred on Friday, April 26, also in the Vrancea seismic zone. Seismic activity was recorded around 02 am and was felt in the following cities. 55km W of Focșani, 59km SE of Sfântu-Gheorghe, 61km NW of Buzău, 68km E of Brașov, 84km NE of Ploiesti.

The second earthquake this weekend occurred in Moldova, Galati, with an intensity of 2.1 degrees Richter. The biggest recent earthquake was recorded last year in Gorj. Two earthquakes occurred a day apart, one measuring 5.2 and another measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale. Later, there were two other aftershocks smaller than 3.4 and 3.5 respectively on the Richter scale.

“There are two unexpected earthquakes for this area and they are the largest recorded here,” said seismologist Mircea Radulian from the National Institute of Earth Physics, who said that there will be aftershocks, which should not exceed magnitude 4.

“On 14.02.2023, 15:16:53 (Romanian time), a significant earthquake occurred in OLTENIA, GORJ, with a magnitude of ML 5.7, at a depth of 40 km.

The earthquake occurred 102 km NW of Craiova, 120 km SW of Sibiu, 146 km W of Pitești, 161 km SE of Timișoara, 183 km SE of Arad, 195 km S of Cluj-Napoca, 204 km E of Belgrade, 208 km E of Zemun, 212 km NE of Nis, 212 km W of Brașov”, the National Institute of Earth Physics reported.
