Press release:

Free medical check-ups for over a thousand people from the countryside

For the third consecutive year, between March and June, over a thousand people from rural areas will benefit from free medical checks for diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, obesity and hepatitis B and C as part of the “Health comes to you” caravan, a project of the Alliance of Chronic Patients from Romania (APCR). Teams of medical specialists and residents, nurses and post-secondary health school students will go into the field to consult, inform and educate patients about the risk of complications of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and hepatitis B and C.

The caravan is already in its third edition and will arrive this year, between March 30 and June 2, in localities in 6 counties: Beștepe – Tulcea, Vârtoapele and Scurtu Mare – Teleorman, Prundu and Greaca – Giurgiu, Alunu – Vâlcea, Mozăceni – Argeș and Tulnici – Vrancea.

The caravan will arrive in each locality for three days, in two distinct stages: the first stage will be dedicated to blood collection, and on the following weekend, the patients participating in the caravan will be consulted by specialist doctors. They will benefit from a full medical check-up and the results of the blood tests carried out the previous weekend will be interpreted. Investigations include a wide range of medical services: cardiology consultation (including EKG, heart score assessment, blood pressure and pulse measurement), diabetes consultation (which includes fasting blood glucose testing, the Michigan test, measurement of abdominal circumference, body fat percentage, calculation of body mass index), blood tests (such as lipid profile, total cholesterol, Ldl, HDL, triglycerides, serum glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin and blood count) and tests for hepatitis B and C.

According to the “Health at a Glance: Europe 2023” report, Romania has the second highest mortality rate from treatable causes (causes of death that are mainly preventable through timely and effective medical interventions, including secondary prevention and treatment). Also, life expectancy in Romania continues to be almost ten years lower than in countries such as Spain, Sweden or Italy. (…)

In addition to medical checks, a very important component of the campaign is information and education of patients. Therefore, patients will receive informative materials about diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, but also about the importance of prevention for a better life. (…)

The “Health comes to you” caravan is organized by the Romanian Chronic Patients Alliance in partnership with Worwag, Zentiva, Novartis, Viatris, Alphega, BMS, Servier, Boehringer, Roche, AstraZeneca, Lilly, ProCardio Association, Neurodiab Association, Romanian Education Association in Diabetes, Podiatry Association and PTS Diagnostics.
