Robert Lewandowski, 35, missed out on the Ballon d’Or two years in a row, in 2020 and 2021, despite being the favourite. Soon justice might be done to him.

Robert Lewandowski had two superlative years in 2020 and 2021. “The best of his career. A friend recently sent me statistics, according to which he scored 100 goals in 85 games at the time”, revealed the Barcelona striker in an interview given yesterday to the German magazine Sport Bild.

France Football magazine did not award the 2020 Ballon d’Or due to the COVID-19 pandemic

However, despite being favourite, the Polish bomber never won the Ballon d’Or. In 2020, when he did the triple championship-German Cup-Champions League with Bayern, the France Football magazine decided not to award him, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And in 2021, surprisingly, the trophy went to Lionel Messi, then at PSG.

The situation could change, however! Messi’s win is currently under investigation in France. There is talk of bribery, vote buying and attempted manipulation. The newspaper “Le Monde” revealed that Pascal Ferré, then editor-in-chief of “France Football”, would have received gifts from PSG to influence the vote in favor of his player.

Robert Lewandowski: “It was my turn”

At the same time, there are rumors that at least the award for 2020 could be awarded retroactively. “I would have liked to receive the Ballon d’Or one day. I’m not angry or sad that I’m missing this trophy, but the feeling is that it was my turn in any of those years,” commented Lewandowski.

He has no claims to the Ballon d’Or 2021: “It belongs to Lionel Messi. But I heard that there is talk of a retroactive award for 2020. That year was remarkable for me, I was at the highest level, I won everything.

And if I were to receive the 2020 Ballon d’Or four years later, I certainly wouldn’t feel offended. It would be a great honor and I would accept the award.” Asked what his favorite is this year, Lewa commented:

“It’s hard to say because we still have the European Championship and the decisive games in the Champions League ahead of us. But at the moment I see Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham as the best in the world”.
