The accident caused the death of 45 people, and one is seriously injured, the country’s transport department stated in a statement quoted by CNN.

An eight-year-old girl who survived was airlifted to the hospital, the public television station said.

According to the SABC, the passengers were pilgrims traveling from Gaborone – the capital of neighboring Botswana – to a church for an Easter conference.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

The accident took place in the Mamatlakala mountain pass, between Mokopane and Marken, where the bus caught fire after falling, the public television station SABC reported.

South African Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga said the government would repatriate the bodies to Botswana, according to the broadcaster.

“I send my sincere condolences to the families affected by the tragic bus accident near Mamatlakala. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in these difficult times. We continue to urge responsible driving at all times with increased vigilance as more people are on our roads this Easter weekend,” said Chikunga.
