Earthquake in Romania, right on Florii day. What a magnitude it had

--

An earthquake occurred this morning in Romania, according to data from the National Research and Development Institute for Earth Physics. What was the magnitude and where did the earthquake occur?

Earthquake right on Palm Sunday

Sunday morning, at 6:43 local time, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.3 occurred in Vrancea county, in the Vrancea seismic zone, according to data provided by the National Research and Development Institute for Earth Physics (INCDFP).

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 86.2 kilometers and had its epicenter near the following cities: 41 km west of Focșani, 67 km north of Buzău, 69 km east of Sfântu-Gheorghe, 82 km east of Brașov, 93 km south from Bacău and 95 km southwest of Bârlad.

Starting from April, 29 earthquakes occurred in Romania, with magnitudes between 2 and 3.9.

Last year, the most significant tectonic movement, with a magnitude of 5.7, occurred on February 14 in Gorj County, at a depth of 6.3 kilometers.

How big is the risk of a strong earthquake in Romania?

Experts from the National Institute for Earth Physics (INFP) drew attention to the possibility of a major earthquake occurring in our country. These warnings were issued in the context of the movement of the Anatolian fault, which has generated new earthquakes in Turkey.

Mihail Diaconescu, specialist in physics at the National Institute for Earth Physics, explained the potential risks for Romania following the series of earthquakes in Turkey.

Turkey is on alert following a series of surface earthquakes of various magnitudes, the largest having a magnitude of 5.6. These earthquakes affected the Tokat region in the center of the country.

Experts warn that following these earthquakes, the Anatolian fault, which also generated earthquakes in Romania, began to move in a worrying way.

Diaconescu mentioned that they are discussing the North Anatolian fault, which stretches somewhat parallel to the southern coast of the Black Sea. He pointed out that near Istanbul, the fault goes towards Greece.

At the same time, he highlighted that the magnitude and depth of the earthquake do not indicate that it would transmit seismic energy to Romania.
