A delegation of the National Research – Development Institute for Earth Physics, led by Constantin Ionescu, General Manager, was invited today to Târgu Jiu, by prefect Iulian Popescu.

“The working visit began with a trip to the field to identify the spaces where the new equipment relocated by the National Research – Development Institute for Earth Physics will be located in our county: the seismic station for locating earthquakes (at Tismana, Sohodol village); sensor for monitoring the effects of earthquakes (at Târgu Jiu).

In addition to these new locations, 8 seismic stations are located in our county for the location of earthquakes”, says the Gorj Prefecture in a statement.

The specialists of the Institute presented to the press the conclusions of the research carried out last year, following the earthquakes in Gorj. “AI found out that our area is pre-stressed, and another important factor, triggering the earthquakes in the county, was the wave of seismic waves coming from Turkey, following the earthquakes produced at the beginning of February 2023. In our county, from the beginning of 2023 until now, 4164 earthquakes with a magnitude between 0 and 5.7 degrees have been detected, almost 84.4% of the earthquakes produced on the territory of Romania, last year”, the institution announced this afternoon -noon.
