The June 6-9 European Parliament vote is a key test of strength for his right-wing coalition.

“We want to do in Europe what we did in Italy… to create a majority that will bring together the center-right forces and send the left into the opposition,” said Meloni, in Pescara.

Her party is the most popular in Italy, with 27% support, according to recent polls, ahead of the opposition Democratic Party, with around 20%, and the left-wing Five Star Movement, with 16%.

Meloni will be the first name on the ballot for Brothers of Italy in all five Italian constituencies for the European elections, but has vowed not to use “one minute” of his time as prime minister to campaign.

The PD leader, Elly Schlein, announced last week that she will also run, as will Antonio Tajani, the head of the Forza Italia party, which is part of the governing coalition.

All three leaders hope to win the popular vote, but, assuming they are elected, they are expected to give up their seats, leaving room for second-place candidates.
