Struck by trouble, a family from Mehedinți, left without a roof after a fire, receives unexpected help from its neighbors. The house had recently been renovated with hard-earned money. People mobilized and jumped in support of the bereaved family. GdS also gave a helping hand, recounting the sad story of the Al Călini family.
A short message, as a sign of thanks, that’s what I received from Al Călini, the resident of Mehedin whose house caught fire.
“I thank you for publishing the article. Some help began to arrive. With the money received from the commune and from the big-hearted people, I started buying materials. I have been tried hard by life. This house was left to me from my in-laws. I took care of them and they left my house. I renovated it with hard earned money and God tried me again. Now I received help from the people, from the town hall, from the neighbors and I hope to restore it as soon as possible. I’m lucky with a neighbor, he let me live in his house. I helped him too, in the past I took care of his father and now the good I did is coming back to me. Starting this week, the work begins. I’m waiting for the craftsmen to come. I thought about pouring a slab, not putting any more beams. The old ones burned completely. I don’t know how to thank those who helped me. I am relieved that my daughter is fine. She needs to prepare for the assessment. I am hopeful that all will be well for us and we will rebuild our house consumed by the flames. I thank the people who are by my side”, says Gheorghe Al Călini.
The man says that he received money from the town hall, from a neighbor he received the panels for pouring the tile at the house, and with the help from people he bought the necessary materials.

I told the story of the Al Călini family a little while ago in GdS. On April 6, the house of the Al Călini family in Gârla Mare, Mehedința commune, caught fire from a short circuit. With their bare hands, Gheorghe, Gica and their daughter Georgiana fought the fire. They barely saved some of the belongings in the house, the rest was consumed by the flames. They were left with their clothes off and the walls blackened by smoke. The man worked abroad for three years to collect pennies. He returned to the country and restored the old house. Now he puts his hope in divinity and the good people who will jump to his aid.
“I lost everything, over 20,000 euros invested. Only the walls remained. The electrical appliances, the furniture, everything is gone. I just saved a few things. We are currently being hosted by some relatives, but we don’t want to stay too much on their heads. We started removing the debris. I’m thinking that later I’ll put foil in place of the roof until the good Lord helps us to restore it. Taking into account that the weather is warm, we’ll sleep in our house as it is, a ruin. I hope that by autumn I will be able to raise money for a roof and some furniture. I work as a caretaker at the school, my wife has no job and is sick. He has diabetes. I hope that we will recover somehow. I am worried about the girl who in two months will take the aptitude tests and the high school entrance exam. He suffered a panic attack, they burned some of his supplies, his desk, the computer I had bought last year. We hope that the good God will help us to overcome. I have hope in people with big hearts that they will help us”, said Gheorghe Al Călini at that time.
In addition to all the challenges of life, it seems that this tragedy, which came overnight, turned the work of the Al Călini family into ashes, but not the hope. For the Al Călini family, “home” disappeared on the night of April 6, but the community did not remain indifferent to their fate, mobilizing to help them with the necessary things for the reconstruction of the house.
The fire did not destroy their hope
Fire always strengthens what it cannot destroy. It is the same for the Al Călini family, they were in despair after their house was reduced to ashes. He saw all his agony destroyed by flames.
