The “Sibiu International Friends” group signed up this year for the Sibiu International Marathon “We want to learn the Romanian language”. It aims to support the process of learning the Romanian language by providing free courses aimed at A1 and A2 levels, addressed to all foreigners, immigrants and migrants living in the city of Sibiu.

The members of the group, who have been living in the city for more than 8 years, identified the need to learn the Romanian language upon their arrival in the city. As part of the process that helped identify the need, in 2018 they benefited for the first time from the support of a non-governmental organization in Sibiu (now defunct), which gave them access to free language learning at conversational and partial A1, for about three months.

Anyone who wants to support the group’s cause can do so by signing up as a runner here. The amount the group wants to raise is 4,000 lei.

“When arriving in a foreign country, familiarizing yourself with the local language is a gateway to the local culture. That is why knowing the local language is extremely important for newcomers. It is a sign of respect, effort, interest and perseverance, which helps to gain the trust of the locals. As a result, they will be more open to sharing aspects of their culture and offering support,” the group’s representatives say.

Sibiu International Friends group

The group was created on the Facebook platform 2 years ago at the initiative of a group of friends made up of foreign citizens, immigrants, migrants and Romanians. The initial goal was to bring together all foreigners residing in Sibiu, regardless of nationality, age, gender or religion, who want to share their experiences, socialize and support each other, in the absence of a social and familiar circle.
