Supermarkets are full of dozens, if not hundreds, of milk varieties, but which one do the experts recommend?

Many times, in the shopping rush, we grab the first product that comes our way in the stores, but it’s not always the best idea.

The link between milk and cholesterol

Nutritionist Mihaela Bilic reassures us about some concerns about cholesterol and says that it is important to have a high level of “good” cholesterol (HDL).

“Total cholesterol doesn’t matter, it’s important to have high HDL! Even though cholesterol has a bad reputation in nutrition, it is a form of fat that is essential to life and has many important functions in the body. Cholesterol enters the structure of bile salts, hormones, the brain and vitamin D. It should be known that food supplies only 20% of cholesterol in the blood, most of it being synthesized internally, by the liver”, says Mihaela Bilic.

The specialist says that we can only find cholesterol in foods of animal origin, including milk and milk products.

In this regard, she says that it is not necessarily important what brand of milk or dairy products we choose, but it is important to be careful that dairy products do not exceed 10% fat.

“Cholesterol exists exclusively in products of animal origin: meat, sausages, cheeses, eggs, butter. The impact of diet on blood cholesterol level is only 10%. Alcohol consumption, smoking and sedentary lifestyle have a major negative impact on cholesterol levels, much more important than the consumption of animal fats.

A diet rich in fiber (whole grains, legumes and vegetables), with a high intake of calcium (dairy products with a maximum of 10% fat), fatty fish and oleaginous fruits (seeds, nuts, hazelnuts) has a positive effect on cholesterol. A healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, avoidance of excessive alcohol consumption and elimination of smoking result in an optimal blood cholesterol level regardless of diet!”, writes the specialist.
