  • The share of European Union residents purchasing printed books, magazines or newspapers online is still significantly higher than that for e-books, online magazines or online newspapers in 2023, according to Eurostat analysis.
  • Only 2.2% of Romanians have purchased an e-book in recent months.

In 2023, only 13.4% of EU residents purchased printed books online in the last 3 months in which data were collected by Eurostat, registering a slight increase compared to the previous year (12.7%), but remaining below the level of 2021 (14.5%).

In both cases, Romania is at the bottom of the ranking, according to the data published on Tuesday by Eurostat.

Almost half of the EU population continues to prefer online purchases of printed books over electronic ones, magazines or online newspapers. In 2023, only 7.2% of EU residents chose e-books, up from the previous year (6.6%), but stable compared to 2021.

We are at the bottom of the e-book rankings

In terms of e-book purchases, Denmark (22.0%), the Netherlands (21.6%) and Ireland (16.9%) had the largest shares in 2023, while Cyprus (0, 6%), Bulgaria (2.0%) and Romania (2.2%) recorded the lowest percentages.

The exceptions are Denmark and Finland, which were the only countries where more people preferred to buy e-books than printed books in the 3 months before data collection.
