The law that provides for the sanctioning of drivers who park with the engine running has been tacitly passed by the Senate. To enter into force, the vote of the deputies and the promulgation of the law by President Iohannis is still needed.

The project provides for the prohibition of the parking of motor vehicles with the engine running in cities and municipalities. Drivers will be sanctioned first with a warning, then with a fine between 100 and 200 lei.

Exceptions will be made by vehicles authorized to use the special light warning signals, such as ambulances, fire engines, police cars, or freight vehicles, which require power from the engine to operate the refrigeration, notes Antena 3.

The approach, aimed at reducing pollution in congested areas, started from a civic initiative developed in Bucharest.

This law already applies in countries such as Italy, France, Austria and Germany, with the allowed time of idling with the engine running varying between 10 and 40 seconds. Drivers who do not comply with the law risk fines from 20 to 750 euros, the cited source states.
