Ukraine has destroyed a Russian Podlet-K1 radar station in an attack led by Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Directorate and a reconnaissance brigade, GUR reports, noting that the system is worth about $5 million and can detect up to 200 targets simultaneously, reports Kyiv Independent.

However, the radar station was destroyed by Ukrainian drones.

Images shared on social media show drones successfully hitting the facility’s radar antenna and generator.

GUR did not provide further details about the attack or the damage.

The Podlet-K1, also known as the 48Ya6-K1, is a modern mobile radar system designed to detect aerial targets at low and extremely low altitudes, according to the Army Recognition website.

What would the Podlet radar station know how to do

“The Podlet radar station is a relatively recent development of Russia – they started distributing it to the military of the aggressor state in 2015,” GUR said on Telegram.

“This system was used by the enemy to detect and transmit target coordinates to the Russian S-300/S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems.”

The Russian concern “Almaz-Antey” is engaged in the development of this mobile radar. The first tests with the Podlet-K1 radar system began in 2010, and five years later the first radar stations of this type entered the equipment of the Russian armed forces and were aimed at strengthening the anti-aircraft defense of Moscow, reports Defense Romania.

Ukrainian military analysts of the ArmyInform publication state that the “Podlet-K1” radar was created by the Russian defense industry specifically for the detection of small targets flying at low speed and at low altitude, such as cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles pilot or even stealth planes.

At the same time, the Russians have claimed over time that this radar station is capable of detecting such targets better than the S-400 systems. That is why the Russians complement the S-400 complexes in “important areas” with Podlet-K1 radars.

According to the “Almaz-Antey” company, the “Podlet-K1” radar would be able to detect an approaching object at a distance of up to 300 kilometers at an altitude of up to 10 kilometers. At the same time, the number of targets it can simultaneously track is about 200.

However, Defense Romania points out, it is worth noting that the experience of using this complex indicates a significant exaggeration by the manufacturer of its capabilities. The Inforesist publication states that this radar system is not capable of countering UAVs or munitions that operate autonomously and have their own navigation system.

Ukrainian drones also attacked a military facility in the city of Kovylkino in Russia’s Republic of Mordovia on April 17, about 800 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, hitting a Container radar station, an intelligence source told the Kyiv Independent.

We remind you that Ukraine attacked the Ilsky and Slavyansk refineries in the Russian Krasnodar region with drones early Saturday morning, causing fires at these facilities, a source in the Ukrainian secret services told Reuters. The Russian Defense Ministry said it had repelled a massive attack by unmanned aerial vehicles sent by Ukraine, according to AFP.

Ukrainian drones also targeted the Kushchevsk military airfield in the same region overnight, the source added.

Several videos on social media showed the damage, the source said.
