Following the storms that swept through parts of Tennessee, Alabamaand Georgia on Wednesday, Blood Assurance, a nonprofit regional blood center, is appealing for urgent blood donations. The severe weather led to the cancellation of numerous appointments and blood drives over the past 24 hours, severely impacting the blood supply.

Blood Assurance serves Middle and Eastern Tennessee, as well as Northwest Georgia, and is calling on all eligible donors in these areas to step forward and donate blood to replenish the critically low supply. Despite the challenges posed by the storms, all Blood Assurance locations are operational.

Our hearts go out to all those affected by the storms,” said a spokesperson for Blood Assurance. “We are closely monitoring the situation and maintaining constant communication with our hospital partners to provide support wherever needed.”

To facilitate donations, individuals can schedule an appointment by visiting bloodassurance.org/schedulecalling 800-962-0628or texting BERRIES to 999777. Walk-ins are also welcome. However, donors are urged to ensure they meet the eligibility criteria, which includes being at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), weighing at least 110 pounds, and being in good health. It is recommended that donors drink plenty of fluids and consume a meal rich in iron prior to donating, while avoiding caffeine.

Established in 1972, Blood Assurance’s mission is to provide a safe and sufficient supply of blood and blood components to healthcare facilities across Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, and North Carolina. The organization relies on the generosity of donors to fulfill this crucial mission and support patients in need.
