Marcel Ciolacu spoke on Saturday, April 27, about the mandatory army in Romania. The Prime Minister gave a categorical answer and emphasized that this possibility is completely excluded.

Marcel Ciolacu talks about the mandatory army in Romania. The prime minister was asked in a show if the army made him a man and if it could be reintroduced in Romania.

Marcel Ciolacu says that the mandatory army will not be reintroduced

The head of the PSD explained that the period he spent in the army was “quite long”, one year and four months. The first time he was sent to Sighetu Marmaţiei. However, the order was changed in the meantime, and he arrived at Geniu, near Bucharest. Then the prime minister came to aviation.

Regarding the return of mandatory service, Ciolacu gave an answer as clear as possible. He says that those times are gone, and Romania needs an army of professionals.

“It was a bit long. I did one year and four months. Others did one year and six months. The first time I was sent to Sighetu Marmaţiei, but I didn’t make it, it changed for me. I went to Geniu near Bucharest. Then I went to Aviation. I think those days are gone. Romania needs an army of professionals, we see the European approach in the first place”, stated Ciolacu on Prima TV.

The Prime Minister does not support the reintroduction of mandatory military service

He was also asked if he supports the reintroduction of compulsory military service. Thus, he emphasized that such a thing is completely out of the question.

The army must be made up of professional soldiers, he says. However, Ciolacu emphasized that the Romanian authorities have a duty to create such a framework that motivates young people to come on their own initiative.

“Excluding something like that! Knowing how to defend yourself, to understand contexts, is not a bad thing, but the reintroduction of the internship is excluded. The army must be made up of professional soldiers. We have the duty to create the framework so that young people come to the army”, concluded Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu.

Even Nicolae Ciucă does not support the reintroduction of mandatory military training

Nicolae Ciucă also spoke about this topic. For his part, the head of the PNL said that he does not support the reintroduction of mandatory military service, but only voluntary military service.

The subject is a complicated one, he says. Ciucă recalled the fact that the army was the first institution in this country that was transformed.

It was modernized by reducing the effectives from 342,000 to 90,000, respectively 75,000 active military personnel, respectively 15,000 contractual civilian personnel.

According to the head of the PNL, it is “very difficult” at the moment to redo everything related to the logistics of carrying out the mandatory military service.

“It is very difficult to talk about the reintroduction of compulsory military service as long as we have reduced the Army. The army was the first institution in this country that was transformed, it was modernized, reducing the effectives from 342,000 to 90,000 – respectively 75,000 active military, respectively 15,000 contractual civilian personnel. At the moment, redoing everything related to the logistics of carrying out compulsory military service is very difficult. As such, voluntary military service, as is already carried out for reservists, can be an option for those who want to join the Army, but not mandatory,” said Nicolae Ciucă on Prima TV.
