Almost a month earlier than other years, wild daffodils bloomed on the outskirts of the city, in the Preajba area. There are five hectares that are in the public domain and are protected even though the flowers spread over a much larger area.

Visitors are advised not to tear the flowers, as they risk fines of thousands of lei. “The fine is up to 10 thousand lei for those who tear the flowers. They are protected. Grazing is also prohibited,” said Consuela Avram, from the Gorj Environmental Protection Agency.

Some visitors have complained that despite the restrictions there are people taking animals to graze in the daffodil patch. “Sheep and goats are coming and the flowers are being rolled. We know that it is not allowed, but we have seen that this is never respected. She is protected with her name,” said a woman from the area.

In addition, the forest in the area has become a place where some people throw their garbage. “I always saw garbage there. After May 1, it’s a disaster, because then the celebration is also held there. I don’t understand who would go to the edge of the forest and throw garbage when you can take them out to the gate for the garbage truck to pick them up,” said another local woman.

The City Hall must also put some signs there to inform visitors of the importance of the place and, through the Local Police, they must issue fines, but it rarely happened that those who go home with arms full of flowers were fined, although they should be protected.
