  • Libertatea took over the announcement of the death without even waiting for an official confirmation, which comes late from war zones. It was an error for which we apologize to Ovidiu Stoica, his family and our readers.

In the initial message, Petru Gabor, a volunteer from Târgu Mureş who has carried out several interventions in Ukraine, talks about a death that occurred “during a mission to extract the wounded from the Kharkiv region from the front line”.

His message was also picked up by several publications, while on the Facebook group Romanian Battlegroup “Getica”, “made up exclusively of Romanian-speaking fighters, in Ukraine” according to the description on the page, a post appeared in which he was announced the death of a Romanian.

A short time ago, the civic activist Radu Hossu, who was recently decorated by Ukraine for the help provided to Ukraine since the beginning of the war, announced that Ovidiu Stoica is alive.

“Many people asked me, especially since it appeared in the news, so I can tell you for sure: No Romanian died in Ukraine. Yesterday’s news about the Romanian who allegedly died in Ukraine is false,” Hossu said on Facebook.

At the same time, another message appeared on the Getica group denying the death: “After two days of confusion, I found out (officially confirmed), with great joy, that we did NOT lose another Romanian besides Robert Wittman, in the war from Ukraine. The sources reporting that he was in debt were dismantled one by one and today Radu Hossu managed to contact him directly by phone”

The death was then denied by the journalist Mircea Barbu, who transmitted from Ukraine for Libertatea: And “I am terribly sorry that I did not wait, as would have been normal and correct, for an official confirmation from the Ukrainian, Romanian, of a hospital something. We journalists should never declare people dead or alive, only the authorities. We’re just reporting on these sad events, however mundane and boring it may sound,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

Libertatea apologizes to Ovidiu Stoica, to his family, as well as to the public.
