The Republic of Moldova will do everything possible to maintain peace, but if it is attacked by Russia, it will defend itself, said the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, in an interview granted to the Russian journalist and blogger Iurie Dudi, declared by Moscow as an “agent foreigner”.

The interview with Maia Sandu was filmed in Chisinau and lasted almost two hours.

About the scenario of a Russian attack: “We will definitely protect our country”

In the interview given in Russian, Maia Sandu was also asked if Moldova would defend itself in a scenario in which it would be attacked by Russia.

“We will do everything so that this (war – no) does not happen, including our European integration plan, because it is a security plan, because the European Union is a peace project.

However, according to the Constitution, we must do everything to keep the peace and to provide security to our citizens, for this reason we have the army, we have the defense sector, for this reason we make investments.

We very much hope that this war (the war started by Russia in Ukraine – no) will soon end and we will be able to make our investments in the economy and other sectors, so that we will not be in a situation where we have to invest in defense. We will definitely protect our country”, Maia Sandu said, according to Unimedia and Ziarului de Gardă.

Why Maia Sandu never met Putin

NewsMaker presents a summary of the statements made by Maia Sandu during the interview with the Russian journalist, in which both political and geopolitical as well as personal topics were addressed, the discussion lasting almost two hours:

  • On the morning of February 24, 2022, the head of state’s first phone calls were to the Minister of Defense and the Prime Minister.
  • If she had been in Zelenski’s place, Maia Sandu would have stayed in the country. “There should generally be no questions here,” the president added.
  • Ukraine has never proposed to Moldova to solve the Transnistrian problem.
  • Asked if Moldova will defend itself in case Russia invades us, Sandu answered: “We will definitely defend our country.”
  • During his term as president, he did not have a meeting with Vladimir Putin because “there was nothing to discuss”.
  • The head of state also added here that Putin “launched the invasion in Ukraine and he can end the war, but unfortunately he doesn’t want it”.
  • “It is not censorship” in the case of the media institutions that remained with their activity blocked.
  • For Maia Sandu, it was very important to have a Romanian passport because “grandmother and grandfather had Romanian passports”.
  • He does not like, in the presidential activity, that he is in the attention of people 24/7. “I really like hiking. But this means that, even when you are hiking, they look at you, how you look, how you walk and so on,” Sandu mentioned.
  • Hiking helps the head of state fight stress: “Especially when she’s in the mountains. (…) Even here. 10-15 km a day helps”.
  • Listen to Coldplay, an alternative rock and piano rock band from London.
  • The neighbors flooded his apartment. It happened during the presidential term.
  • Mother brings him lunch at the Presidency.
  • Sometimes she posts on Instagram alone, other times the president’s team posts.
  • Most of the time, the working day ends at 20:00.

Iurie Dudi, one of the most influential journalists and bloggers in the Russian Federation, was declared by Moscow as a foreign agent following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, writes zugo.md. Russian legislation provides for special monitoring of “foreign agents” – individuals risk up to five years in prison if they refuse to inform Russian society that their activity is financed from abroad.

Dudi started his career as a sports journalist, and since 2017 he has the YouTube channel “vDud”, which in March 2024 had 10.3 million subscribers and 2.1 billion views. It is one of the reasons why, officially, Iurii Dudi was declared a foreign agent. He left Russia in the meantime.
