Xi Jinping is visiting Hungary next month: “It is in our interest. China is stronger than the EU”

The President of China, Xi Jinping, will pay a visit to Hungary next month, Gergely Gulyas, the chief of staff of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, announced on Thursday, quoted by Reuters.

Gulyas stated that the event will take place on May 8-10.

He told the press that it is in Hungary’s interest to have good economic relations with as many countries as possible, and China is one of the great powers of the world, “stronger than the European Union”.

Hungary considers it useless to draw ideological boundaries in the economic field and “we are happy with the two-day visit of the Chinese president”, added the official.

Reuters reminds that in February, when a high-ranking Chinese official met in Budapest with Orban and the Minister of the Interior, Sandor Pinter, China offered to give Hungary support in security matters, outside of trade and investment relations.

Closer Hungarian-Chinese cooperation takes place in the context of Budapest’s last decade’s attempts – under the leadership of Orban – to assert its independence from Western powers.

In May, Xi will also meet with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, in Paris.
