At least 36 Syrian soldiers were killed in an Israeli attack that targeted the Aleppo region in northern Syria at dawn on Friday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH) announced, informs the AFP agency, quoted by Agerpres.
According to this NGO based in the United Kingdom and which has a vast network of sources in Syria, the attack specifically targeted “missile depots belonging to the Lebanese Hezbollah”, which is fighting alongside the Syrian regime.
“At least 36 soldiers were killed and dozens more wounded in the Israeli raids” that targeted an area near Aleppo airport, the NGO said.
For its part, a military source quoted by the official Syrian news agency Sana reported “several killed and wounded among civilians and soldiers” in an Israeli raid on military positions in the vicinity of Aleppo.
“The Israeli enemy launched an air strike against several targets in Athriya, southeast of Aleppo,” the source said.
Contacted by AFP from Jerusalem, the Israeli army replied “that it does not comment” on this press information.
An airstrike targeted a residential building in the suburbs of Damascus on Thursday, injuring at least two people, according to the official Sana news agency, which blamed Israel for the attack. The targeted area, Sayyida Zeinab, is considered a stronghold of pro-Iranian groups in Syria.
The Israeli military has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria since the start of the war in the neighboring country, mainly targeting pro-Iranian groups, but has stepped up its attacks since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023 between Israel and Hamas.
Israel rarely comments on its attacks, but says it would not allow Iran to strengthen its position on its border.
