The Russians have taken steps to protect their submarines from Ukrainian drones, including installing cages on control towers (kiosks) and building a fake submarine next to a real one in a port, reports The War Zone.
Moscow has already lost a Kilo-class diesel-electric submarine, the Rostov-on-Don, worth about $350 million in this war.
Recently, the Delta-IV class submarine Tula was photographed with a cage mounted over the conning tower. This is to protect that element from a drone attack. At the top of the tower, submarines have an area where crew members can sit when the ship is on the surface. Such cages are widely used in the ground war in Ukraine, being mounted on tanks, howitzers or armored personnel carriers.
The cage on Tula appears in images broadcast by the Russia-24 television channel. The nuclear submarine, which has ballistic missiles on board, is part of the Northern Military Fleet.
At the same time, the British Ministry of Defense published on the social network X (formerly Twitter) images of a fake submarine built by the Russians in the Novorossiisk naval base in the Black Sea. The “decoy”, consisting of a black-painted shape and structure mimicking a conning tower, was next to an actual Kilo-class submarine.
Russia has also placed fake planes, which mimic the Tu-95 Bear or Su-34 models, in air bases.
