The approach of the Easter holidays for Orthodox Christians makes Romanians wonder what the prices of Easter cakes are for 2024. Bakeries are already preparing for the holidays, but customers are not flocking to place orders.

This year’s sales were slightly lower because of the prices, but also because the Orthodox Easter is celebrated a long time after the Catholic Easter. In addition, the Purchasing Power of Romanians decreased due to inflation.

What are the prices of Easter cakes 2024

The Easter holidays are approaching for Orthodox Romanians and many of them have already entered the shopping fever for the festive meal. In the big supermarkets, they are in for unpleasant surprises when they want to buy cozonac.

Romanians are accustomed, based on good traditions, to not miss pasca and cozonacul on the Easter table, which are loved by millions of Romanians. In recent years, fewer and fewer women make these treats at home, due to their busy schedules. They have to buy it from the trade. This year, however, the prices went crazy, a simple bun ended up being more expensive than meat at Mega Image.

Thus, a 900-gram piece of Bucovina cozonac from Gusturi Românești costs 69.90 lei. The price is exaggerated, considering that a kilogram of chicken breast costs 25 lei in certain stores. Under these conditions, Romanians will have to orient themselves very well when they start shopping for Easter.

In other supermarkets, pastries are sold at prices that vary between 20 and 40 lei, while at pastry shops they reach prohibitive prices, varying between 70 and 100 lei. The latter do not contain preservatives, have a shorter shelf life, and are made with shit, cocoa and poppy seeds.

The ones in supermarkets are cheaper varieties, with only cocoa, and containing preservatives.

Eggs became more expensive around Easter

Many Romanians choose to stock up in advance for the Easter holidays. And that’s because traditional products are already on store shelves.

In Europe, egg prices are 10% to 15% lower than last year, but still nearly double what they were in 2021.

Compared to prices two years ago, eggs in supermarkets are 45% more expensive. Thus, a box with 30 eggs that cost, in 2022, 16 lei, this year ended up costing 23 lei.

Under these conditions, a 10-egg casserole will cost around 20 lei in stores, while a 6-egg casserole will cost around 16 lei. These prices are valid for code 0 eggs, i.e. organic. However, code 3 eggs are much cheaper, their price can even be half. More precisely, a box with 10 eggs costs about 10 lei, but the quality is commensurate with the price.

Despite the fact that the offer of eggs is very varied in supermarkets, many Romanians prefer to buy them from the market. Here, eggs are sold by the piece, and the price varies between 90 bani and 1.4 lei per piece.
