In 2023, tourists spent approximately 678 million nights in short-term rental accommodation in the European Union, booked through the Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group and Tripadvisor platforms. The data are up by 13.8% compared to 2022 (596.5 million), according to the data published on Monday by the European Statistics Office (Eurostat), writes Agerpres.
Monthly data for stays through these platforms exceeded the 2022 level in 11 of the 12 months, with the fourth quarter of 2023 seeing increases of over 20%.
Specifically, in October there were 55.3 million nights in short-term rented accommodation spaces in the European Union, booked through the Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group and Tripadvisor platforms, an advance of 21.9% compared to October 2022. In in November, there were 31.8 million nights (20% expansion compared to November 2022), and in December 45.3 million nights (25.8% increase compared to December 2022).

The statistical data is the result of the agreement between the European Commission and the four private collaborative economy platforms, concluded in March 2020.
The most popular EU regions in the third quarter of 2023 were Jadranska Hrvatska in Croatia (23.7 million nights), Andalusia in Spain (14 million nights) and Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur in France (12.2 million of nights). France has six regions in the top 20, Spain and Italy each have five, Greece two, Portugal and Croatia each have one.
