The marathon for life of the medical sampling and transplant teams started on Friday evening and continued until Sunday. There were 5 organ and tissue samplings in 5 different cities. Air transport was needed in emergency conditions, this being provided by SMURD, the General Aviation Inspectorate of the MAI, the Department for Emergency Situations, together with the Ambulance Services.

BISTRIŢA

The marathon for life started on Friday evening, April 26, at the Bistrita County Emergency Clinic Hospital. With the consent of the family of a patient aged 36 years old, diagnosed with brain death following a ruptured AVM and hemorrhagic stroke and thanks to the collective effort of the ATI team and the coordination of the Bistrita hospital (Dr. Anca Moldovan, Assistant Maria Kiss, Dr. Daniel Lehaci, Assistant Crina Sabău, Assistant Diana Dumbrăvan, Assistant Aissa Dincă), were taken the liver, kidneys and heart.

With the help of the General Aviation Inspectorate of the MAI, the heart could be transported in a very short time to the Emergency Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases and Transplantation – IUBCvT – Tg. Mureș and the liver to the IInstitutul Clinical Fundeni, thus 2 patients in critical condition were saved through transplant interventions. The kidneys were transplanted to 2 other patients at ICUTR Cluj.

A few hours later, at the Emergency Clinical Hospital “Prof. Dr. Nicolae Oblu” Iasi, the family of a 56-year-old brain-dead patientagreed to organ and tissue donation.

With responsibility and professionalism, the ATI and coordination team of the hospital in Iasi (Dr. Ecaterina Olaru and Dr. Anca Rotaru), together with the regional transplant coordinator, Dr. Raluca Neagu Movilă, made it possible to start the springs of hope for other patients .

The liver sampling intervention was carried out by the team from the “Sf. Spiridon” Iași, and the corneal sampling by the team from the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Iași hospital. The surgical team from the Dr. CI Parhon Clinical Hospital, Iasi, performed the kidney sampling intervention. The Tissue Bank team of the Colentina Clinical Hospital, led by Dr. Andrei Nica, performed the osteotendinous tissue sampling intervention.

Thus, a patient in critical condition was saved thanks to the liver transplant intervention performed at the “Sf. Spyridon”. The kidney transplant interventions were carried out at the Dr. CI Parhon Clinical Hospital, Iasi, by the teams and thus 2 patients will escape the torment of long dialysis sessions. The sampled cornea will be transplanted within the Bucharest Ophthalmological Emergency Clinical Hospital.

Thanks to the European organ exchange platform FOEDUS, of which ANT is also a part, because there were no compatible receptors for lungs on Romanian territory, a team of surgeons from the Center hospitalier universitaire vaudois in Lausanne, Switzerland was also present in Iasi.

On the night of Saturday to Sunday, at the Cluj-Napoca Emergency County Clinical Hospital – ATI II (Neurosurgery), a new organ sampling was performed. A multidisciplinary team coordinated by Dr. Adrian Prie and Dr. Zorinela Andrasoni – KDP, sampled the liver, kidneys and cornea from a 54-year-old patient who was brain dead following a hemorrhagic stroke.

The team also included specialists from the Fundeni Clinical Institute for the liver sampling intervention and from ICUTR Cluj for the kidney sampling intervention. The cornea was transplanted at the Bucharest Ophthalmological Emergency Clinical Hospital.

At the Craiova County Emergency Clinical Hospital, with the support of the ATI and hospital coordination team from Craiova (Dr. Mircea Ionescu and Dr. Zorilă Andreea), a new organ sampling intervention was carried out, from a young patient, 21 years old, diagnosed as brain dead as a result of multiple trauma caused by a road accident. The liver and kidneys were taken.

At the Sibiu County Emergency Clinical Hospital, the first intervention since 2024 was carried out in this health unit, for the sampling of organs and tissues (bone and tendon). Following the altruistic gesture of the family of a 49-year-old patient diagnosed with brain death following a hemorrhagic strokea life was given back to a suffering patient through a liver transplant, and other patients will have a normal life thanks to tissue transplants.

For the samples, teams arrived from the St. Spiridon Iași Hospital for the liver and from Bucharest for the corneas and osteo-tendinous tissues. The bone and tendon grafts arrived at the Tissue Bank of the Colentina Clinical Hospital.

Thoughts of thanks and gratitude go to the families of the donors, who found the strength to give life, beyond their pain. From the beginning of the year until now, there have been 31 brain-dead donors in Romania.
