Why the price of petrol and diesel at the pump fluctuates

Petrol and diesel prices at the pump fluctuate due to a number of factors, including:

1. The cost of oil. The price of crude oil in international markets has a significant impact on prices at the pump. Variations in oil prices can be driven by geopolitical factors, such as regional tensions, international conflicts or decisions by organizations such as OPEC.

2. Demand and supply. Fluctuations in the demand and supply of petroleum products can influence prices at the pump. An increase in demand or a decrease in supply can cause prices to rise, while a decrease in demand or an increase in supply can cause prices to fall.

3. Changes in refining and distribution costs. The costs of refining and distributing petroleum products can vary depending on factors such as the technology used, government taxes and regulations, and labor costs.

4. Duties and Taxes. Duties and taxes imposed on petroleum products by the government can influence prices at the pump. An increase in taxes or duties may cause an increase in prices for end consumers.

5. Exchange rate fluctuations. Gasoline and diesel prices can also be affected by changes in currency exchange rates. For example, a depreciation of the local currency against the US dollar can lead to an increase in pump prices for imported petroleum products.
