Meta recently announced that it will provide access to the Horizon OS operating system used on the Meta Quest virtual reality headset to third-party hardware manufacturers such as ASUS and Lenovo.

The decision is a big one for the company, which is trying to expand its influence in the tech industry by even partnering with Microsoft to develop a limited edition Xbox-inspired Meta Quest.

The strategy adopted by Meta is similar to that of Microsoft in the 1980s, which allowed the Windows operating system to be used by several hardware manufacturers, in contrast to Apple’s closed approach with MacOS.

The model was also communicated by Mark Zuckerberg in a video message broadcast in February, in which he indirectly criticized the closed model of Apple Vision Pro, suggesting that this openness could counter Apple’s dominance in the mobile device industry, writes Meta Blog.

Meta plans to develop a “spatial framework”

In addition, Meta plans to develop a new “spatial framework” that will allow mobile app developers to migrate existing Android and iOS apps to Horizon OS. This will make it easier to adapt existing applications for use in virtual reality, making the operating system more attractive to developers.

Meta’s opening of the operating system comes in the context of collaboration with Qualcomm, highlighted by the performance of the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform used in Meta Quest 3. These performances highlighted the potential of mixed reality, showing promise for the future of VR.
