Google is about to redefine the smartphone market in 2024 with an innovative approach to the launch of the upcoming Pixel 9 series. According to the latest information revealed by 91mobiles, based on renders created by OnLeaks, Google will not only release a standard model of the Pixel 9, but will expand the series with two more impressive variants: Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro “XL”.

The move marks a major shift in Google’s branding strategy, moving away from the single format adopted with the launch of the Pixel 5 and returning to size differentiation by reinvigorating the “XL” label.

Google, until 2019, used the XL branding for its larger models, but abandoned this name with the transition to the “Pro” designation starting in 2021. Now, it signals a strategic return to an iPhone-like division, offering consumers the option between two different sizes for the Pro tier, a decision that makes reviving the XL name extremely logical.

The standard Pixel 9 design falls in line with previous leaks, highlighting flat edges – a change from the curved designs of the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro – and screen corners that appear to be getting more rounded with each new generation.

Display specs differ for each model, with the Pixel 9 Pro XL having a 6.5-inch screen, the Pixel 9 Pro a 6.1-inch one, and the standard Pixel 9 a 6.03-inch one. Interestingly, this is a slight size reduction for the XL variant compared to the current Pixel 8 Pro’s 6.7-inch display, suggesting that Google is looking to strike a better balance for users who find the 8 Pro too bulky.

Both Pro variants will be equipped with an impressive three-camera system on the back, promising to bring exceptional photography capabilities to a more compact format. For digital photography enthusiasts, this could be the ideal time to pick up a Pixel model.

However, the launch of the new flagship Pixel models is still months away, and Google plans to launch other devices like the Pixel 8A and Pixel Fold 2 first, possibly at its annual entry/exit conference in May. Given this pace of innovation, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a Pixel 9A in the future, adding yet another variant to this generation, reaffirming Google’s commitment to innovate and adapt to the ever-changing needs of consumers.
