Suceava: Man detained for smuggling. Tens of thousands of untaxed cigarettes found on him. The file, opened after he was caught transporting contraband cigarettes

A man from Suceava County was arrested on charges of smuggling, after the police found almost 50,000 untaxed cigarettes after searching his home. The case against the Suceava resident was opened after he was stopped in traffic and caught transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes from outside the EU.

The investigation in this case started after, on April 25, in the car driven by a man, the policemen from Gura Humorului found thousands of packages of contraband cigarettes.

“In continuation of the investigations regarding the detection in traffic on 25.04.2024 within the radius of the city of Gura Humorului of a car inside which the amount of 2,490 packs of cigarettes, different brands, of non-EU origin, was identified, based on the informative-operative and procedural activities carried out, the police officers of the Office for Combating Customs Frauds obtained and executed a home search warrant within the Straja commune, with the support of fighters from the Special Actions Service, to complete the evidence. On this occasion, at the building located in the village of Straja, where the man suspected of committing smuggling acts lives, i.e. a 42-year-old man, as a result of the home search, a number of 9 (nine) mobile phones were seized, as well as the sums of 10,433 lei and 235 euros”, informs, on Saturday, the Suceava County Police.

In the morning of April 26, around 10:00, the man was located and identified within the radius of his residence. Since there was an arrest warrant in his name, the suspect was taken to the police headquarters to participate in the procedural activities ordered, including the home search that took place on the same day.

“Following the hearing and administration of the evidentiary material, the preventive measure of detention for a period of 24 hours was ordered against the 42-year-old man, being placed in the custody of the IPJ Suceava. The investigations are continued under the aspect of committing the crime of contraband”, say Suceava Police officials.
