War brings only destruction and poverty, and the struggle for peace comes at a high price. This is what veterans from Moldova who fought on the front during the Second World War say. On the eve of May 9, three of them, who were visited by officials, spoke about the horrors of war and how important it is for people to maintain peace and well-being in the country.

Ion Mereacre is one of the 500 people from the village of Costești who were recruited during the Second World War.

Ion MEREACRE, WAR VETERAN: “War brings only destruction, death of people and poverty. Poverty because people in wartime can’t work, they lose everything.”

He has seen the horrors of war with his own eyes, and all he wants now is…

Ion MEREACRE, WAR VETERAN: “Peace on the whole planet and people living honestly, not wronging each other.”

And Alexei Eremciuc is a war veteran. In March he turned 100 years old and, having reached this age, he enjoys his large family, having six children, twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Alexei EREMCIUC, WAR VETERAN: “Peace in all the world. And I wish everyone health.”

“- Dad was enlisted on July 14, 1944. He learned to be an artilleryman in the military regiment.
– And until the end I was a knight.”

Alexei Eremciuc’s sons say that their father always avoided talking about the war.

“He didn’t like to talk about the war because it was very difficult. He saw the most complicated thing – war. He saw people die.”

On the eve of May 9, three war veterans were visited by the head of state, the president of the parliament and the prime minister.

“I am here to thank you for your courage. When you had to, you went to defend our land.”

“I have come to thank you, because it is thanks to you that peace has been established in Europe.”

According to the head of state, 37 veterans from the Second World War are still alive in Moldova.
