The initial infection can occur anywhere in the body, including the lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, or other areas. When this infection spreads into the bloodstream, the immune system can overreact, releasing chemicals that lead to generalized inflammation. This inflammation can disrupt blood flow and lead to organ dysfunction.

Septicemia, risks

Dr. Adrian Marinescu, the medical director of the Matei Balș Institute, explained, exclusively for DC MEDICAL, what septicemia actually is. Septicemia is a serious medical condition that can occur when the body responds to an infection in an extremely aggressive way, triggering a systemic inflammatory reaction.

“The new and correct term is sepsis. It means generalized infection that can lead to organic, even multi-organ damage. We reach severe sepsis that puts the patient’s life at risk. Sepsis means that a localized infection is not controlled and spreads further.

It depends a lot on the host, i.e. the patient. A patient who is fragile, vulnerable, with associated chronic diseases, with advanced age, when we talk about sepsis and the prognosis can be unfavorable. Sepsis can be caused by any germs, bacteria, regardless of whether the bacteria is aggressive or multi-resistant. It depends on each individual patient.

Sepsis means a diagnosis made by the doctor, through laboratory tests. He puts it clinically. Things are quite simple,” explained Dr. Adrian Marinescu, primary physician for Infectious Diseases, medical director of the Matei Balș Institute, exclusively for DC MEDICAL.

Florin Piersic, septicemia

Florin Piersic is hospitalized in a serious condition, caused by sepsis originating from a total knee prosthesis. The prosthesis was removed and replaced with a temporary one, equipped with an antibiotic pump.

“Following the investigations carried out at our hospital, considering the serious condition of the patient Florin Piersic, a team composed of orthopedic doctors, ATI, infectious disease specialists and a cardiologist was formed and it was decided to perform emergency surgery.

The knee prosthesis was extracted, extensive debridement was performed and a temporary spacer type prosthesis was implanted, carrying an antibiotic. Currently, the patient is in the ATI ward, in a stable condition,” says university assistant Dr. Șerban Dragosloveanu, the interim manager of Foișor Hospital, in a press release.
