South African singer Tyla made her Met Gala debut Monday night in a body-hugging gown covered entirely in sand by Balmain, Business Insider reports. Although the appearance was spectacular, this is not the only reason why Tyla stole all the eyes on the red carpet. The artist could not climb the steps by herself and was carried by a man from his staff, while three others held the train of her dress.
“We wanted to use the sands of time as a theme,” she said, referring to the evening’s “Garden of Time” dress code.
Tyla also had sand scattered on one of her shoulders and the opposite forearm. She completed her look with an hourglass that she carried instead of a purse.
When asked if she would be able to have dinner at the event, Tyla’s answer was simple. “Who knows? We’ll figure it out. Who cares? I’m cute!” she said.
The singer had a harder time walking the red carpet because of the dress and needed help to climb the steps. A man on her staff was lifting her up the stairs while three others held her dress.
The theme of the evening was “Sleeping Beauties” and the dress code was “The Garden of Time”, an allusion to a story of the same name by science fiction writer JG Ballard about the ephemeral nature of beauty. This was a source of inspiration for the designers who used the event to promote their outfits.
The purpose of the Met gala, in the tradition of American philanthropy, is to finance the fashion department of the prestigious museum, The Costume Institute. According to The New York Times, a seat at this year’s dinner costs $75,000, an entire table $350,000, and the previous edition brought in approximately $22 million.
