King Charles is returning to public duties almost three months after announcing he had cancer

Britain’s King Charles will resume public duties on April 30 after nearly three months of cancer treatment, Buckingham Palace announced on Friday, Reuters reports.

King Charles, who announced in early February that he had been diagnosed with a non-specific form of cancer, will return to public duties as he continues cancer treatment, after the palace said doctors were “very encouraged” by his progress.

“His Majesty The King will soon return to public duties following a period of treatment and recovery following his recent cancer diagnosis. To mark the milestone, the King and Queen will make a joint visit to a cancer treatment center next Tuesday, where they will meet specialist doctors and patients. This visit will be the first of a number of external engagements Her Majesty will undertake in the coming weeks,” a Palace statement said.

In addition, the King and Queen will host Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan for a state visit in June.

The good news comes after a difficult start to 2024 for the British royal family. Six weeks after revealing the king’s cancer diagnosis, his daughter-in-law Kate said she was undergoing preventative chemotherapy.

The Palace spokesman said the king’s condition would continue, “but doctors are sufficiently satisfied with the progress so far that the king is now able to resume a number of public duties,” writes The Guardian.

Public commitments will be adjusted to minimize any risk to its continued recovery. The spokesman added that it was too early to say how long Charles’ treatment would continue, but his medical team were “very encouraged by the progress so far and remain positive about the King’s continued recovery”.
