Today, anxiety and obesity are two increasingly prevalent health problems, and the connection between them is, more often than not, underestimated. Anxiety, being a psychological condition, can be fueled and amplified by the negative perception of those around and the lack of social acceptance. At the same time, obesity may be influenced by harmful eating behaviors, which may be used as a coping mechanism for anxiety-related emotions.

I talked to Radu Leca, the psychologist who was in this situation and came out victorious, about the connection between anxiety and obesity and what an obese person can do to overcome the threshold of anxiety.

“Anxiety also arises from obesity”

Radu Leca points out that anxiety can also arise from the condition of obesity, as obese people are often subjected to negative looks and social judgments in a variety of environments, from public transport to the workplace and even in interpersonal relationships.

This vicious circle is also fueled by a lack of social inclusion and acceptance. Obesity can be perceived as an obstacle to social integration, and this awareness can amplify anxiety. Faced with this dilemma, obese people wonder what they can do to gain social acceptance and relieve anxiety, and more often than not they end up doing anything but only the thing to be done not, namely to really work on them, on their health, on their well-being.

“Anxiety also arises from obesity. The totality of negative looks, which the obese person perceives at a social level (everywhere, in the subway, in any public transport, in a taxi, from colleagues, from relatives) goes towards the formation of a source of anxiety. The behavior of all of the listed also turns into a source of anxiety.

Social insertion, social acceptance – and it turns from non-existence into a form of source of anxiety. Then, the obese person says in the following way: “What should I do so that I am no longer anxious, but socially accepted?”. And start coloring her hair, getting tattoos, buying colorful clothes, having the latest gadgets, driving powerful carsbut, specifically, he it doesn’t go where it belongs, i.e. in the gymbecause it seems unnecessary and too difficult.

The obese, according to the notion of psychonutrition, where I, Radu Leca, am a pioneer, always he will equate his emotions with the desire to consume a lot of food. When about him they say that they consume their emotions, that they eat their emotions, it’s not a lie. But never can’t kill anxiety with foodmakes it worse”, Radu Leca told us, exclusively for DC Medical.

It’s hard to mobilize, to discipline yourself, to finally do the things that are good for you (but create a huge inner conflict). It is difficult, however, to see hope where perhaps no light can be seen. It’s hard to believe that the light is still there. But maybe it is necessary to remember that the light is no longer visible because we are very far from it, not that it no longer exists. And every step we take can bring us closer to the light.
